The Club was intended to serve the needs of London golfers who were only able to play their golf on often crowded and unkept courses in the area. Named St. George's, it was to become the English rival to Scotland's St. Andrew's. Royal status was bestowed on the Club by King Edward VII in May 1902. The Links provides a severe test for even the greatest of golfers and the fact that only three Open winners, Bill Rogers in 1981, Greg Norman in 1993 and Ben Curtis in 2003, have managed to be under par after 72 holes, speaks for itself.

Overview of The Open host course: Royal St George's
Royal Liverpool is the second oldest links course in England, it has hosted eleven British Opens, the first in 1897. The course was laid out by George Morris, the brother of Old Tom Morris.
The layout of Royal Lytham & St Annes has remained faithful to the original created by the Club's first Professional, George Lowe, over a century ago. The course is in The British Open rota and will host the championship in 2012.
The Deal course is traditionally laid out on a narrow stretch of land extending to Sandwich Bay, and the natural links terrain has been subtly used to provide a wide variety of challenges. On almost every hole there is an abundance of large sand dunes which establishes the undulating character of the course and makes it unique. Unlike most other courses the fairways are just as undulating and it is seldom that a completely flat stance can be obtained other than on the tees. As with all traditional seaside links, the wind is a major factor which has to be taken into account when deciding on club and shot selection.
The Prince's course is a 27-hole layout, with each 9-hole loop named as Himalayas, Dunes and Shores. In 1932 the course hosted its first and only British Open Championship.
