The original course was formed as a nine hole course in 1890 on a strip of land called the Warren between the town of Burnham and the village of Berrow. The course is laid out in the traditional manner of nine holes out and nine back. The first nine skirt the sand dunes and coastline northwards, turning inland and southwards and then following the coast road through Berrow, past the Church and back into Burnham. As with all links golf the challenging factor is the wind and its unpredictability, which means that the course can play differently almost every day. The greens are renowned as true and quick and the course is guaranteed to be in good condition all year. Excellent drainage due to the sandy subsoil ensures that the course is rarely if ever closed. The course demands that you use almost every club in the bag and the experience is memorable and always a challenge. This is why Burnham and Berrow is chosen so frequently as hosts for many championship tournaments.
It was not formed until May 1897. It was originally a 9 hole course but was extended to 12 holes by 1906 and to 18 holes in 1908. A Clubhouse was built in 1907 at a cost of £1,000 and can still be seen as a private house to the right of the 16th fairway. It is one of the top course in the country with unique holes.

St Enodoc has one of the finest links golf courses in the South West of England with everything you would expect from a James Braid design; undulating fairways, firm greens, some blind shots and all with the added bonus of some of the greatest sea and estuary views on any course in the world. No two holes are the same; it may not be long by today's standards but it is tight with punishing rough and so requires courage and accuracy to cope with some of the problems posed. Royal North Devon at Westward can rightly claim to be the cradle of English Golf. Founded in 1864, it is the oldest golf course in the country and is regarded as the St Andrews of the South. The golf course is as tough as any of the UK’s more famous links layouts and has recently been placed in Golf World's "Top 100 Courses in the World" that a golfer “must play”.

A great links golf course
As you stand on the intimidating 1st tee, with all 18 holes laid out in front of you the sights and sounds of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the headland will take your breath away. In keeping with most Colt designs the course is set out in two loops of 9 holes. The front 9 holes hug the sand dunes and coastline, offering some spectacular views out to sea. The back 9 holes offer a different, but no less demanding test of golf as you head inland and then back towards the clubhouse. There is only one blind shot on the course and, from the 1st to the 18th the ocean view provides a constant reminder of your proximity to the sea.
