Golf in Lazio - Region of the Month

Today we’ll explore the Italian golfing destination of the year: Lazio. With its majestic golf courses and impressive landmarks, this region will leave you speechless both on the course and in the city.

Let’s dive deep into Lazio’s features and golfing havens!

Lazio Curiosities and History

Lazio, whose name probably goes back to the Latin word "latus" (wide, flat land), was inhabited early on by native inhabitants and Greeks. From the 8th Century on, the Etruscans exercised a strong influence on the region - Rome was founded and had grown to be a regional power. In the following centuries, Lazio, with its capital Rome, became the center of a world empire.

With the fall of Rome decay, destruction, and the Christian church dominated the history of today’s province. From 1870 on, Lazio was a part of the Kingdom of Italy and Rome was chosen as the capital city.

Lazio’s most developed industrial sectors are construction, graphics, chemical-pharmaceutical, agricultural and tourism.

Best Golf Courses in Lazio

Lazio is home to some of the most beautiful and renowned golf courses and clubs in the country.

Here are our top picks for golfing in Lazio together with information and dedicated tips:

From left to right: Marco Simone, Terre dei Consoli, Parco di Roma, Olgiata and Nazionale

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club:

Considered one of the most prestigious golf courses in Italy, with views over the Eternal City and the dome of St Peter’s Basilica, Marco Simone’s 18-hole championship course, which has been completely transformed to host international golfing events, including The 2023 Ryder Cup and the 2022 and 2023 Italian Opens, and its nine-hole course sit alongside a stunning 11th-century castle.

Located a mere 30 minute-drive from the centre of Rome, visitors to Marco Simone Golf & Country Club can combine a memorable golf experience, with traditional Roman culture, food and entertainment.

Terre dei Consoli Golf Club:

The 18-hole Championship Course (6.885m, Par72), panders to the natural landscape of the green valley that welcomes it and complements it with obstacles that elevate its technical level, conquering the golfer through their spectacularity.

These characteristics are perfectly encapsulated in the signature hole Hole 9 called "The Island," where the green seems to emerge from the body of water.

The whole Terre dei Consoli Golf Club project aims, in addition to giving subscribers the greatest number of services and the highest quality available in golf today, to make Golf an easy, accessible and fun game.

Parco di Roma Golf Club:

The 18-hole course at the Parco di Roma Golf Club is located within the Parco di Veio, a green area rich in archaeological and environmental beauty, and nicely reconciles both technical and aesthetic aspects.

The pencil of architect P. B. Dye has succeeded in harmonizing a course of modern design, with wide greens and numerous slopes, and a scenery made of hills from which it is possible to admire the extension of the Capital, St. Peter's and not least rare and unique relics of Roman history.

Olgiata Golf Club:

The course has two courses, the West Course and the East Course, with a total of 27 holes; it was opened in 1961 and designed by British Architect C. Kenneth Cotton. The West course, the older of the two, consists of 18 holes.

Events of special and even international significance have been held on this course, such as the 2002 Italian Open, the 1968 and 1984 editions of the World Professional Team Championship and numerous other F.I.G. competitions.

In 2012 it was almost completely redesigned by American Architect Jim Fazio to adapt to new requirements and is now ready to host International Tournaments; it has three configurations: PAR 71, 72 and 73, and 7 hitters for all categories.

The newly created East Course, on the other hand, is a 9-hole, par 36 course with a length of 2,947 meters. Far from being an executive course, the East Course is a true course in its own right, on which various competitions and matches are played.

Golf Nazionale:

Designed by George and Jim Fazio and David Mezzacane, set in the picturesque natural landscape of upper Lazio, 40 km from Rome, Golf Nazionale is a technical, compelling and fun course.

Very fascinating is the atmosphere on this course, which is entirely enveloped by dense forests of ancient oaks.

It hosted the 1991 World Cup, and in addition to boasting numerous titles as a "Top Ten Course" in Italy, the technical quality and great enjoyment of the course, suitable even for amateurs, rightfully place it among the best European golf courses.

Golf Nazionale marries the principles of eco-sustainability with the turf consisting of a new generation Bermuda Grass that is well adapted to the climate of the Mediterranean basin, capable of withstanding very harsh winters.
