Lombardy Curiosities and History

Lombardy is an Italian region located in the northern area of the country.

Its history and traditions are an important part of the country’s cultural heritage and still affect the lifestyle in the region, despite the strong modernization that the global economy and tourism have brought.

Milan, the capital city, has been the fulcrum of the regional economy, culture and social life ever since its first settlement, with an ever-increasing importance in business, industry, tourism and fashion.

Lombardy’s most developed industrial sectors are engineering, chemicals and textiles, although food companies, fashion and publishing industries, shoe factories and furniture factories are also flourishing.

Food & Wine in Lombardy

Lombardy, as the other Italian regions, is rich in culinary and winemaking traditions.

Here are our best recommendations for our beloved golfers and travelers:

Cotoletta alla Milanese: Juicy and mouth-watering steak, covered in breadcrumbs and fried. That’s one great way to make a tastier steak (and slightly less healthy)

Milanese rice: This traditional plate will melt your taste buds and change their future perception of flavor. The rice is cooked in a meat broth, then mixed with saffron and bone marrow for the juiciest of flavours.

Pizzoccheri: Possibly the most challenging pasta plate in Lombardy. Pizzoccheri are a dark pasta made out of buckwheat flour and enriched with Bitto, Casera and Parmesan cheese, potatoes and savoy cabbage. One could call Pizzoccheri the Mac & Cheese from Lombardy.

Franciacorta DOCG: One of the most famous wines of the region. Franciacorta is a fresh, sparkling wine with a slightly sweet note and delicate bubbles. The perfect pairing for fish dishes, white meats and especially for the Cotoletta alla Milanese.

Oltrepò Pavese Metodo Classico: Together with Franciacorta, Oltrepò Pavese sits on the throne of white wines. It is very savory, with good structure, fresh and harmonious. Excellent as an aperitif or to pair with fish and egg appetizers, spicy and fragrant pasta dishes, and fish dishes.

Nebbiolo: On the palate, the Nebbiolo wine is decidedly dry and structured, harmonious and very elegant. Thanks to its fruity note and pleasing taste it’s perfect for savory pasta dishes, roasted red meat, grilled red meat, and medium-aged cheeses.

Best Golf Courses in Lombardy

Lombardy is home to some of the most beautiful and renowned golf courses and clubs in the country.

Here are our top picks for golfing in Lombardy (and surroundings) together with information and dedicated tips:

Best Golf Courses in Lombardy. From left to right: Bogogno, Monticello, Villa D'Este, Franciacorta, L'Albenza.

Bogogno Golf Resort:

Although Bogogno Golf Resort is in Piedmont, we cannot fail to mention it because of the proximity and quality of the course, reasons why we always recommend it to those visiting Lombardy to play golf.

Bogogno Golf Resort offers two golf courses with different settings and challenges

The Conte course is a par 72 that features a design reminiscent of a links course, with large open spaces and several flat areas, with sizable lakes and wild rough in the outlying areas, while the outermost strip of the course is framed by the peaks of Monte Rosa.

The Bonora course is a par 72 with a lively development reminiscent of a parkland course and stretches over a vast hilly area surrounded by wilderness where there is no shortage of streams and still intact forests typical of the Ticino Park.

Monticello Golf Club:

This fascinating Golf Club offers the possibility to play on two different courses, which imply different challenges and difficulty levels:

The Red Course is a fascinating course of 6,410m and Par 72, always in the highest positions of the Italian Ranking.

It has hosted seven editions of the Italian Open, counting prestigious winners such as Billy Casper, Sandy Lyle and Greg Norman.

The Blue Course, on the other hand, is a highly attractive Parkland that complements, without being outdone by, the historic Red course. Technical course, which offers players the opportunity to confront different playing skills.

Villa D’Este Golf Club:

Designed in 1926 by Peter Gannon, it covers a distance of 5760 yards for a course par of 69 strokes.

18 holes, studded with carefully designed natural obstacles, challenge the skill of enthusiasts and professionals alike, offering an unforgettable experience.

A natural and scenic setting that is among the most impressive in the world: more than 30,000 trees-pines, chestnut trees, birch trees-the Pre-Alps in the background and glimpses of Lake Montorfano.

Franciacorta Golf Club:

Eighty hectares surrounded by greenery, woods and vineyards: the ASD Franciacorta Golf Club is a place custom-designed for a sporty and dynamic family. Its three courses wind their way through 27 holes, all with great personality, traversing the gentle ups and downs that surround the 50,000-square-meter lake.

L'Albenza Golf Club:

A splendid course awaits you at the Bergamo Golf Club "L'Albenza": 27 holes of undisputed technical standing, skilfully designed by the pencil of the well-known English architects Cotton & Sutton, divided into three courses (Blue, Yellow and Red) on which, every year, more than 100 competitions are played.

Nestled in an enchanting environmental and scenic setting, lying on soft hills and rich in centuries-old vegetation, this course represents a heritage to be experienced and shared with those who, thanks to the Game of Golf, wish to savor the pleasure and excitement of unique moments.
