Golf in Sardinia - Region of the Month

Sardinia is the second biggest Italian island, located south of Corsica and west of Lazio and Campania. This region is very rich in history, traditions, natural wonders and beautiful cities.

With its unspoiled coastline and nature, Sardinia is renowned for stunning beaches, turquoise sea, unique landscapes and its myriad of traditional recipes.

Let’s give it a look!

Sardinia Curiosities and History

A crossroads of cultures in the heart of the Mediterranean, Sardinia's history stretches back millennia. The island's most enigmatic residents were the Nuragic people, who dominated during the Bronze Age.

Their legacy lives on in the thousands of nuraghi, distinctive truncated cone-shaped towers, and elaborate tombs scattered across the island.

After this era, Sardinia fractured into independent kingdoms called Giudicati, which successfully repelled a Muslim invasion in the 9th century.

The island then transitioned through various rulerships, including the Kingdom of Aragon, the Austrian Habsburgs, and finally the House of Savoy.

In 1861, the Kingdom of Sardinia, under the Savoy leadership, played a pivotal role in the unification of Italy.

Food & Wine in Sardinia

Sardinia, as one might imagine, is rich in culinary and winemaking traditions.

Here are our best recommendations for our beloved golfers and travelers:

Culurgiones: Typical Sardinian stuffed pockets with 2-4 inches in length and 1-2 inches of width. The dough is made from semolina flour, white flour, eggs, water and salt, giving a soft crust to the ravioli.

Su Porcheddu: Roast pork, usually cooked on a spit for up to five hours. The result is a delicious and crispy piece of meat mainly served for special occasions.

Malloreddus: Also known as Sardinian gnocchetti, it's a pasta shape typical of the island, made with durum wheat semolina flour and water. This soft and mouth-pleasing pasta retains sauces and flavors like no other and is a great choice for creamy pasta dishes.

Cannonau: Arguably the most iconic wine of the region, Cannonau is characterized by a typical and particular richness of taste and fragrance, with good structure and notes of flowers and fruit. Great pairing for meat dishes and savory recipes.

Carignano: Another typical red wine, with ruby red color and a flavor on the palate that ranges from fruity to herbal, and is warm and persistent. A great combination with meat plates.

Mirto: Oftentimes labeled as the national drink, Mirto (or Myrtle) is the iconic Sardinian liquor. Strong in flavor and quite heavily bodied, Mirto will surprise you after a meal or in any occasion.

What to do in Sardinia

Wondering what are the best activities - besides golf - and excursions you can enjoy in Sardinia?

Here are our top 3:

Sailboat tour from PALAU to the Maddalena Archipelago: Discover some of the most iconic coastal landscapes in La Maddalena during this full-day, small-group sailing tour of the famed Sardinian archipelago. Relax onboard or hop into the water for a swim.

Kayak tour with aperitif and dolphins: Get a chance to spot local wildlife — bottle-nosed dolphins, the elusive Sardinian mouflon, and even wild boars frolicking in the water — before winding down with a complimentary traditional aperitivo.

Underground Cagliari tour: Much of Cagliari’s fascinating history is hidden beneath the modern city, and with this tour you can explore the warren of caves, tunnels, and crypts that date back centuries. Head underground with a guide to visit the crypts of Santa Restituta and Sant'Eulalia, as well as the Salesian School Tunnel used to shelter students during WWII bombing raids and today lit only by candles.

Best Golf Courses in Sardinia

This region is home to great golf courses.

Here are some of the best:

From left to right: Is Arenas, Is Molas, Pevero, Tanka

Is Arenas Golf Club:

The 18 holes par 72 golf course, designed by the world renowned architects Robert Von Hagge, Smelek & Baril, is ranked among the most spectacular golf courses in Europe by the prestigious international Rolex guide. Total of 6300 meters, with a different landscape for each hole, framed by a pine and juniper tree forest, the golf course takes you into the heart of more than 1100 hectares of untouched wilderness. Draped across a sumptuous landscape the 18 holes course offers abundant rewards for stylish play, astute strategy and proper execution. Every hole is different and thrilling.

Is Molas Golf Club:

The Is Molas golf course is one of the most famous in Italy, and has been the benchmark for this sport in Sardinia for over thirty years. Thanks to the proximity of the sea and the protection of the surrounding hills the locality of Is Molas enjoys a unique microclimate, mild and particularly favorable for golf all year round: the temperature reaches 20 degrees C at the beginning of the spring, rises to over 30 in summer and even in December and January can easily exceed 15 degrees.

Pevero Golf Club:

Nestled among the emerald waters between Pevero and Cala di Volpe bays, Pevero Golf Club appears as a magical place where peace reigns supreme. Designed by the legendary landscape architect Robert Trent Jones, Pevero Golf Club has been placed by Golf Magazine among the 50 Top Golf Courses in the World.

Tanka Golf Club:

Located in a natural setting, where the smell of salty air mingles with the scents of Mediterranean scrub that grows on the coast of Villasimius, lies Tanka Golf.

The 18 holes, awarded in 2007 by magazine “The World of Golf” as best new golf course in Italy, unfold on a surface of 40 acres overlooking the Marine Protected Area of Capo Carbonara.
